I had no idea that there was so much I didn't know about the world of journalistic podcast and video production. My fellow Raider Voice staff members as well as the RaiderVision (the school daily news show) staff had the opportunity to attend a Broadcasting Bootcamp last weekend led by Don Goble, an award-winning speaker, author, and multimedia educator from the JEA. Mr. Goble taught us how to improve our podcasts (something The Raider Voice hasn't tried before) and our video packages. This year, our newspaper has been branching out from articles and photography to more contemporary forms of news writing, so the Broadcasting Bootcamp has brought us a big step forward.
Although I do not plan on producing many podcasts this year, I feel that the information about podcasting was helpful to know, especially when it comes to sound and speaking, two important elements of video producing. One of my goals for this year is to tell more stories visually through video, and what I learned from Mr. Goble will definitely help me produce video packages more efficiently and effectively. Something that I found very helpful was the six-shot sequence Mr. Goble spoke about, emphasizing the importance of including a variety of angles to keep viewers' interest throughout a video. My past videos have been very single-sided, so in the future I will try to include more interesting angles and rule-of-thirds for interviews. In addition to learning how to make great videos, Mr. Goble gave us two assignments to work on during the bootcamp. The first involved creating a video base on the prompt "overcoming adversity." I can't say I was very proud of how my video about life lessons from playing sports turned out, but I did learn a lot from Mr. Goble and Ms. Rodriguez's feedback. I was much more satisfied with the second assignment I completed, a video about the Breakthrough Miami event happening at school that day. I worked on it with another student from RaiderVision, writing the voiceover script and filming part of the interviews and b-roll, while he did the other part of the filming and the editing. You can find the video here if you would like to check it out! Overall, Broadcasting Bootcamp with Don Goble was a very informative, inspiring, and fun experience. I can definitely say I learned a lot and I can't wait to make some exciting new videos for The Raider Voice. I would especially like to thank Mr. Goble for his awesome advice and for spending the weekend with us.
