The motto of this year's NSPA convention in Washington, D.C.? JOURNALISM MATTERS.
And after attending the trip with my newspaper staff, I can't help but agree. Members of The Raider Voice staff and the Yearbook and Broadcasting classes and I flew up to the nation's capital last weekend for three days, and left the convention with an immensely better mindset and a myriad of ideas for how we can improve our newspaper and become better journalists ourselves. We were busy all weekend doing activities both for the convention and for fun. We attended the opening ceremony with one of my favorite journalists, Chuck Todd, attended "sessions", where we learned skills from feature-writing to editing to building journalism careers, and even got to see the city, taking a night tour of the monuments and visiting the Washington Post printing plant and the National Zoo. Another exciting aspect of this trip was my participation in a national student media contest for feature writing. Myself and the about one hundred other students participating watched a presentation and received an information sheet, then were allotted ninety minutes to write a feature article about a doughnut shop owner and his inspiring life story. I ended up getting an Honorable Mention, which is great! Next time I will strive for something a little higher than that, but I am happy with my results because it's my first time participating in an on-the-spot writing contest, so I had no idea what to expect. Overall, I had such a great time on this trip and can't wait to implement what I have learned to the benefit of the newspaper.
